It is something that is biologically hardwired into them. A consequence is that forcing school start times incompatible with this has devastating effects on how well they learn compared to well they could. Similar facts are true of people who are naturally \"night owls\" and run on different circadian rhythms than the rest of us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMinor Flaws\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWalker's book has only a few minor flaws:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e1. Although he provides an excellent explanation of why most sleeping pills should be avoided, he does not mention whether this includes melatonin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2. His discussion of the nationwide dollar impacts of poor sleep could be better presented. The unfortunate truth is that given the numbers we have heard spent on wars and, especially, financial bailouts and stimulus, rattling off numbers that are “merely” in the hundreds of millions or even low billions hits us in a place we are now numb.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e3. Although Walker's discussion of creativity in the dream state and the state when just waking from dreams is a fascinating part of the book, I would have liked to see some discussion of how objectively accurate intuitions are during these moments. Anecdotally, I used to joke that my best ideas came to me during this time or not at all. Sometimes, however, the thoughts just turned out to be overconfident upon more profound reflection. So when we first start reading \"Nexus\" we roll our eyes about he seemingly pointing only to the usual contemporary suspects on the right with the usual simplified rethoric about them, only to be regained to a balanced conversation when he admits that controlling information as a means to power is much older and comes from the left and marxism. Hence, Instead of a fairy tale for children of good left guys and galls always accurate and trustful and bad ones always lying that simpler less sophisticated minds in mainstream try to persuade us of, with Harari we get an adult centrist view and reflection about the nuances and both positive as well as negative view information on all sides.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe leave the book much more educated and aware of all that surrounds us in terms of information networks and their potential for good and bad. The same is true for Harari's view on Artificial Intelligence intertwined with information. Never childly, neither too optimistic nor too fearful he presents a realistic and credible view of how AI is going to occupy its space and mingle with us. Oprah's sections are written in blue, while Dr. Perry's are written in black, to easily distinguish the two. There are sections at the beginning of each chapter where either Oprah or Dr. Perry will recount events that happened in their lives and discuss the effects of trauma. Most of the rest of the chapter is then written in more of a conversational tone; as Perry and Oprah go back and forth in a way that feels more like a discussion on Oprah's show.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the first chapter of the book there is a diagram that I found very helpful that depicts the 'Hierarchical Organization of the Human Brain'. This diagram is referenced many times throughout the book, and is a key to understanding the effects of trauma. Dr. Perry explains that traumatic experiences are first registered in the lowest levels of this hierarchical structure, so that certain situations that are similar in some way to a traumatic situation of the past, still trigger the same physiological responses even before our cortex can analyze these situations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOprah and Dr. Perry do a great job of using examples of patients or guests that experienced trauma, and explaining the underlying biological responses that have shaped their behaviors later in life. In the chapter on self regulation and balance, Dr. Perry explains the processes involved in the body's core regulatory networks, and the body's response to stress activation. Dr. Perry discusses drug addiction and how people use artificial means to attempt to restore some sense of balance. There is another chapter that discusses love, and the effects of growing up in an environment where you do not feel cared for. Later chapters focus on identifying trauma, and the eventual healing process.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis book can be helpful for a wide range of people. Obviously if you have experienced trauma, especially early in life, this book can help explain what adaptations your brain went through and how this affects your perspectives on situations later in life. Perhaps equally important though, is the ability to prevent trauma-related issues in future generations by using these insights to guide your parenting behaviors and decisions.
