A Cup of Sake Beneath the Cherry Trees by Yoshida Kenkō

Kenkō was a court official who became a monk, and he wrote these short pieces on whatever scraps of paper were nearby — apparently pasting them to his wall rather than assembling a book.

The result is a fourteenth-century mind thinking aloud: that the cherry blossom is best just before it opens and just after it falls, that a house should be built for summer, that a man who talks about his dreams is tiresome, and that nothing is more precious than the fact that none of it lasts.
