A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov

Pechorin is a young officer in the Caucasus who is bored, brilliant, and destroys people mainly to see what will happen. He abducts a Circassian girl because he wants her, tires of her within weeks, and provokes a duel over a woman he does not want.

Lermontov tells it out of order and through three narrators, ending with Pechorin's own journal, so the reader meets him first as a rumour and finally from inside. In the preface Lermontov had to explain, irritably, that a hero of our time meant a diagnosis rather than an endorsement. He died in a duel at twenty-six.
