A man starves himself in a cage as a public entertainment. The crowds used to come in thousands; now the circus has moved him near the animals and nobody stops. He goes on fasting anyway, for a reason he explains only at the very end.

This was the last collection Kafka corrected on his deathbed, which gives the title story an unbearable second meaning — he was unable to eat when he wrote it. Alongside it are the other late pieces, including Josephine the Singer and the strange, funny First Sorrow.
