The Chipping Cleghorn Gazette carries an unusual notice: a murder is announced and will take place on Friday the 29th of October, at Little Paddocks, at 6.30 p.m. The whole village turns up expecting a party game.

The lights go out, a torch sweeps the room, three shots are fired, and a man nobody recognises is dead on the floor. Miss Marple, staying nearby, is the only person who notices what the arrangement of a doorway makes possible. It is one of Christie's most ingenious mechanical tricks.
