Willy Peter Reese was a twenty-year-old bank clerk and aspiring poet when he was conscripted. He wrote this memoir on leave in 1944, gave it to his mother, went back to the front and was killed within weeks.

He does not excuse himself. He describes the burning of villages, the starvation of prisoners, forcing a Russian woman to dance naked for the amusement of his unit, and his own gradual conversion into someone capable of it. It is the most unflinching account of moral collapse written by a participant in the war.
