The narrator is a SecUnit — part organic, part machine, rented out to protect survey teams. It hacked the module that controls it, and instead of going on a rampage has downloaded seven thousand hours of soap opera. It calls itself Murderbot and would like everyone to stop looking at it.

Then the survey team it is assigned to starts having equipment failures that are not accidents, and Murderbot has to be competent in public, which it finds far worse than danger. Wells writes social anxiety in an armoured killing machine and it is one of the funniest and most affecting voices in modern science fiction.
