Addie Bundren is dying, and outside her window her son is building her coffin so she can hear it. Her last wish is to be buried in Jefferson, forty miles away, and the family sets off with the body in a wagon.

Faulkner tells it in fifty-nine chapters across fifteen narrators, including one chapter that is a single sentence and one from Addie herself after her death. Flood, fire, a broken leg set in cement, and a family whose reasons for making the journey are each entirely selfish. It is very funny and completely horrifying.

Faulkner said he wrote it in six weeks and did not change a word. A cornerstone of American modernism.
