Cannery Row in Monterey is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light. Steinbeck opens with that sentence and then describes the people: Mack and the boys who live in a converted fish-meal shed, Lee Chong the grocer, Dora who runs the brothel, and Doc at the biological laboratory.

There is barely a plot — the boys decide to throw Doc a party, and it goes wrong, and they try again. Between the chapters Steinbeck drops small standalone pieces about the street. It is the warmest thing he wrote, and Doc is based on his closest friend, the marine biologist Ed Ricketts.

Steinbeck's most-loved short novel, and the best entry point to his work.
