Mr Shaitana collects things. At a dinner party he seats eight guests at two bridge tables: four detectives, and four people he believes have committed murder and got away with it. During the evening he is stabbed in his chair by the fire.

Nobody left the room. One of the four bridge players did it. Poirot has no physical clues at all — only the scorecards, and what each player's bidding reveals about the kind of mind they have. It is the purest psychological puzzle Christie ever set.

Christie named it among her own favourites, and it is one of the fairest puzzles she wrote.
