Clytemnestra is a Spartan princess, trained to fight, married happily and then widowed by Agamemnon — who killed her husband and her infant son and took her. Ten years later he sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia for a favourable wind.

Casati gives her the entire life before the axe, which is what the Greek sources leave out, and the result is that the murder in the bath reads as the only reasonable thing in the book. The Spartan childhood with Helen, and the ten years of waiting while she ruled Mycenae alone, are the strongest sections.

One of the best of the recent Greek myth retellings — furious, and very well researched.
