Kochan is a sickly boy in wartime Japan who realises early that his desires are not the ones he is supposed to have, and constructs a mask — a performance of ordinary heterosexual young manhood — that he wears without a break.

Mishima published it at twenty-four and it made him famous. The Saint Sebastian passage, the fixation on a schoolmate's armpits, and the courtship of a woman he is entirely unable to want are written with a clinical honesty that was extraordinary for 1949 Japan, and the ending is a refusal rather than a resolution.
