In 1937 Jack Miller joins a scientific expedition to Gruhuken, an abandoned mining site in Svalbard, mostly because he is poor and the others are not. The trappers who take them there will not stay the night.

One by one the others have to leave, and Jack is alone with the dogs through the four months when the sun does not rise. Paver writes it as his journal, and the entries get shorter. It is a traditional ghost story done with complete conviction, and the isolation is as frightening as the thing on the beach.

One of the most genuinely frightening ghost stories written this century.
