Earth is emptying. Dust from the last war has killed most animals, so owning a real one is the highest status a person can have, and Rick Deckard has an electric sheep he is ashamed of. Six escaped androids have arrived from Mars, and the bounty would buy him a live goat.

The test that separates humans from androids measures empathy, and the further Deckard goes the more the test starts to say something uncomfortable about him. Dick is far stranger than the film — there is a religion built on a shared hallucination, a mood organ you dial to choose your own despair, and a competing police station that should not exist.
