Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler

A Viennese doctor and his wife each confess to a desire they felt for a stranger. He walks out into the night, and over the next few hours passes through a series of encounters that get progressively less explicable — ending at a masked gathering in a mansion where he does not have the password.

Schnitzler was a physician and a contemporary of Freud, who wrote to him admitting a certain reluctance to meet a man who seemed to know the same things. The novella never resolves whether any of it happened, and the marriage at the end has been permanently altered by things neither of them did.
