Euclid wrote the Elements around 300 BC and it remained the standard geometry textbook for over two thousand years — the second most printed book in the Western world after the Bible.

Its importance is the method rather than the results: five postulates and five common notions, and every subsequent proposition derived from them by proof alone. Volume I covers Books I to II with Sir Thomas Heath's translation and his extensive commentary, including the long history of attempts to prove the parallel postulate.
