The Guest is the finest: a schoolteacher in the mountains is ordered to deliver an Arab prisoner to the police, walks him to a crossroads, gives him food and money, and lets him choose which road to take. What the prisoner does, and what the teacher finds written on his blackboard afterwards, is the whole of the Algerian tragedy in ten pages.

The only story collection Camus published in his lifetime, and among his best work.
