Asad's argument is that the secular is not what remains when religion is removed. It is a positive construction with its own history, its own assumptions about the person, the body and pain, and its own requirements of the believers it claims to have freed.

He traces how the category of religion itself was formed in European history and then exported, examines human rights, torture and the politics of pain, and analyses what happens when Muslim populations are told they must become secular in order to be modern. It is a demanding academic book and one of the most cited in its field.
