Erikson drops you into the middle of a war between an empire and a free city, with gods interfering, an army that has stopped trusting its own empress, and a floating fortress belonging to someone who is not remotely human.

Nothing is explained. No character stops to summarise the history, the magic system or who any of the ascendants are, and the reader is expected to assemble it. It is the most demanding opening in fantasy and the reason the series has the reputation it does — the payoffs, when they arrive several books later, are enormous.

Book one of the ten-volume Malazan Book of the Fallen. Not a gentle start, and worth it.
