Grave of the Fireflies by Akiyuki Nosaka

Seita is fourteen. His sister Setsuko is four. Their mother dies in the firebombing of Kobe, their father is at sea with the navy, and an aunt takes them in until food gets short enough that she stops pretending to want them.

Nosaka wrote it as an apology. His own sister died of malnutrition in his care in 1945, and the story is his attempt to say what he could not say to her. It runs about fifty pages and it is written in long, unbroken sentences that give the reader nowhere to rest.

The source of the Studio Ghibli film, and if anything harder than the film. Includes a second story in most editions.
