At a children's Hallowe'en party, thirteen-year-old Joyce announces that she once saw a murder and did not realise it at the time. Nobody believes her — she is a known liar. Before the evening is over she is found drowned in the apple-bobbing tub.

Ariadne Oliver was there and fetches Poirot. The investigation turns on which of several deaths in the village years earlier might have been a murder, and on the uncomfortable fact that Joyce's story may have been true even if she stole it from someone else.
