In the winter of 1944, eight-year-old Hannibal Lecter and his small sister Mischa are hiding in a hunting lodge in Lithuania when a group of deserters finds them. Only one of them comes out.

He is raised afterwards in France by his uncle's widow, a Japanese noblewoman, who teaches him a formal discipline he applies to something else entirely. Harris wrote it under pressure from a studio and it is the most divisive book in the series — explaining a character whose power came partly from not being explained.

The fourth and final Hannibal Lecter novel, and chronologically the first.
