Sixteen-year-old Deborah Blau is admitted to a psychiatric hospital, and has spent years in Yr — a private world with its own language, gods and geography, which began as a refuge and has become a prison with its own punishments.

Greenberg wrote it from her own three years of treatment under Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, who appears as Dr Fried. The therapy scenes are the substance of the book, and the title comes from the doctor's refusal to promise a cure: she offers only the chance to fight for a life, with no guarantee it will be a pleasant one.

Published in 1964 and never out of print. One of the foundational books about psychiatric treatment from the inside.
