Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism by Vladimir Lenin

Lenin wrote this in Zurich in 1916 with a specific question in front of him: why had the European powers gone to war, and why had the socialist parties of each country supported their own governments.

His answer is economic. Competition produces monopoly; banking capital merges with industrial capital into finance capital; the export of capital replaces the export of goods; and the world gets divided among a handful of powers, after which any further redivision requires war. It is short, densely evidenced with statistics, and remains one of the most cited works on the subject.
