Maurice Hall is an ordinary, unimaginative Edwardian Englishman who falls in love with another student at Cambridge, and then has to work out what to do with a life the law and his class have no place for.

Forster wrote it in 1914 and left instructions that it be published after his death. The reason he could not publish it was not the subject but the ending: he insisted on a happy one, and said that a story like this that ended in misery would be one more thing to be forgiven rather than a book worth writing.

One of the most important novels in English gay literature, and quietly moving in a way its reputation does not prepare you for.
