It is the first serious account of prison life in Russian literature: the bathhouse scene, the theatricals the convicts stage at Christmas, the hospital, the stray dog, and the slow realisation that the peasant convicts hate him for his class more than for his crime. Tolstoy called it the finest book in modern Russian literature.
