Oroonoko is an African prince, educated and in love, betrayed by a slave trader and sold into bondage in the English colony of Surinam, where the narrator — who claims to have known him there — records what happens to him.

Behn was one of the first women in England to earn a living entirely by writing, and the novel is remarkable for 1688 in treating an African protagonist as a tragic hero rather than a curiosity, even while the narrator's own colonial assumptions remain fully intact. It is short, and considerably more troubling than a simple abolitionist reading allows.
