The book consists of a foreword, a nine-hundred-and-ninety-nine-line poem by a dead American poet, and two hundred pages of line-by-line commentary by his neighbour Charles Kinbote.

Kinbote's notes have almost nothing to do with the poem. He believes it secretly encodes the story of the exiled king of Zembla, who he strongly implies is himself, and he keeps interrupting to complain about the poet's wife. Whether Zembla exists, whether Kinbote is a professor from Russia, and who actually fired the shot are all left for the reader to assemble.

The most ingeniously constructed novel in English, and far funnier than its reputation suggests.
