Diogenes lived in a large jar, owned a cup until he saw a boy drinking from his hands, and told Alexander the Great to move because he was blocking the sun. He wrote nothing; everything survives as anecdotes recorded by others.

This collection gathers those sayings along with the other Cynic and popular moralists — Crates, Bion, Teles, Demonax — who taught philosophy in the street rather than the academy. Their method was to embarrass people out of conventional assumptions about wealth, status and shame, and it is still effective.
