A father sits on a beach with his son asleep beside him, waiting for the boat. He talks to the boy about Homs before the war — the souk, the grandmother's house, the olive trees — a city the child is too young to remember.

Hosseini wrote it after the photograph of three-year-old Alan Kurdi on a Turkish beach in 2015, and the whole book is about thirty pages, illustrated in watercolour by Dan Williams. The last page is a prayer that says exactly what a parent in that position is actually afraid of.
