In November 2021 a dinghy sank in the Channel and twenty-seven people died. Delecroix's novel gives the voice to the French coastguard operator who took the distress calls that night and was later investigated for what she did not do.

She refuses to be sorry in the way she is expected to be. Her defence is a long, corrosive argument that she is being made to carry the guilt of an entire continent's arrangements, and that everyone demanding her apology is standing on the same shore. It is uncomfortable in exactly the way it intends.
