Sultana's Dream and Padmarag by Begum Rokeya

In 1905, from a house in Bhagalpur, Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain wrote a story in English about a country called Ladyland — where women run the universities and the state, and men are kept indoors for everyone's safety.

Sultana's Dream is one of the earliest feminist utopias written anywhere in the world, and it is funny as well as furious. Paired with it here is Padmarag, her novel about a women's refuge in Bengal, where widows, runaways and abandoned wives build a life outside the households that discarded them.

The foundational text of women's education in Bengal, by the woman schools are still named after.
