In 1938 a Japanese novelist travels through colonial Taiwan on a lecture tour, accompanied by a young Taiwanese interpreter called Chizuru. The book is presented as her rediscovered travel memoir, and it is mostly about food.

Under the descriptions of winter melon tea, braised pork and street-market noodles runs everything the narrator cannot see about her own position — the assumptions she makes, the affection she offers on her own terms, and the enormous patience of the woman translating for her.
