Sade wrote this in the Bastille in 1785 on a roll of paper twelve metres long, hidden in his cell wall, and believed it lost when the prison was stormed. It resurfaced a century later and has been banned repeatedly ever since.

Four wealthy libertines seal themselves in a remote castle with victims and four storytellers, and work through a catalogue of six hundred cruelties. It is a philosophical text as much as a pornographic one — an argument that nature sanctions any appetite and that law is merely the preference of the powerful — and it is genuinely repellent by design.
