At a party a banker argues that the death penalty is more humane than life imprisonment. A young lawyer disagrees, and they bet two million roubles that he can spend fifteen years in voluntary solitary confinement in the banker's garden lodge.

He does. Chekhov tracks what he reads across the years — languages, then the gospels, then theology, then everything — and the banker, now ruined, comes to the lodge on the final night intending to kill him. What the lawyer has left on the table is one of the most quoted passages in Russian literature.

A story of about fifteen pages, and one of the most argued-about in the language.
