The Bantrys wake to find a young woman strangled on their library floor. Nobody in the household has ever seen her, she is dressed for a nightclub rather than a country house, and Colonel Bantry's reputation begins dissolving before breakfast.

Mrs Bantry sends immediately for Miss Marple, on the grounds that the village will destroy her husband unless the thing is solved fast. Christie wrote this deliberately taking the most clichéd premise in detective fiction and doing something with it that nobody expects, and the solution turns on a detail about fingernails.

One of the best-plotted Marple novels, and a perfect introduction to Christie.
