Four twelve-year-old boys in small-town Maine set out on a two-day walk along the railroad tracks to see the body of a boy struck by a train, in a story King has said is closer to his own childhood than almost anything else he has written.

It became the film Stand by Me, and the novella is less concerned with the body itself than with the last summer before adolescence changes everything between the four friends — the leeches, the junkyard dog, the older boys who want the discovery for themselves. It is one of King's finest works outside the horror genre entirely.
