Foster is a folklorist rather than a compiler, so the first half is about what yokai are for: how they encode local geography and social rules, how they migrated from village belief into Edo-period print culture, and how they became manga, anime and Pokémon. The second half is an illustrated catalogue of about fifty of the most important.
