Frederick Clegg collects butterflies, has no friends, and has been watching an art student named Miranda for two years. Then he wins a great deal of money on the football pools, buys an isolated cottage, and chloroforms her.

The first half is his account, in flat, decent, deeply unsettling prose — he does not think of himself as a criminal and keeps insisting he is a gentleman. The second half is her diary from the cellar. Fowles wrote it in 1963 and it is the origin of an entire subgenre, and still the best example of it.

Fowles' first novel, and one of the most disturbing books in modern English literature.
