Thomas Ligotti is a horror writer, and this is the only non-fiction book he has published. Its thesis is that consciousness is an evolutionary accident that allowed one species to know it will die, and that everything humans build is a device for not thinking about it.

He works through the pessimist tradition — Zapffe, Schopenhauer, Mainländer, Cioran — and through the four strategies Zapffe said we use to survive being aware: isolation, anchoring, distraction and sublimation. It is bleak on purpose and unusually well written, and it is why the first season of True Detective sounded the way it did.
