In November 1910 seven men travelled in secret to a private club on Jekyll Island, Georgia, using first names only, and drafted the legislation that became the Federal Reserve Act. That much is a matter of record.

Griffin builds from there an account of central banking as a mechanism for transferring wealth through inflation, tracing the history of fractional reserve banking, the boom-bust cycle, wartime finance, and the bailout precedent. It is a polemic rather than a neutral history and is contested by mainstream economists, which the author would take as the point.
