Watson wrote the first honest account of how science actually gets done: gossip, rivalry, guessing, a race against Linus Pauling, and a good deal of time spent in Cambridge pubs rather than at the bench.

It is gripping and it is also the primary evidence in a long argument, because of how Rosalind Franklin appears in it — dismissed and patronised in the text, and the source of the X-ray image that made the model possible. Watson's own epilogue concedes his portrait of her was wrong, which is the least he could do.
