Structured as a series of workplace statements collected from the human and humanoid crew of the spaceship Six-Thousand Ship, the novel documents how the crew's sense of purpose and even identity begins destabilising after a set of strange, organic objects is brought aboard.

Ravn uses the corporate-testimony format to explore questions of consciousness, labour and what distinguishes human from artificial experience, in prose that reads as much like conceptual poetry as conventional science fiction. It was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize for its formal originality.
