Her argument starts from freedom: because I can only will my own freedom coherently by willing everyone else's, oppression is not a preference but a contradiction. She then catalogues the ways people flee from freedom — the sub-man, the serious man, the nihilist, the adventurer — and takes on the problem of violence in political action.
