In 1965 the Indonesian army killed somewhere between five hundred thousand and a million people in a few months, with lists supplied by the American embassy. It is barely known in the West and it worked, so it was exported.

Bevins traces the method — mass killing of the left, followed by a friendly government and an open economy — through Brazil, Chile, Guatemala and more than twenty other countries, using declassified cables and interviews with survivors. He was the Washington Post's Southeast Asia correspondent, and the reporting from Indonesia is the spine of the book.

One of the most important works of recent history writing, and very difficult to put down.
