On a long train journey, a man named Pozdnyshev confesses to a fellow passenger that he murdered his wife, driven to a jealous rage by her friendship with a violinist, and uses the confession to launch into a sweeping, disturbing condemnation of sexual desire, marriage and women in general.

Tolstoy wrote the novella during a period of increasingly radical, ascetic personal beliefs, and its provocative arguments against sexuality and conventional marriage caused genuine scandal and censorship on publication, remaining one of his most controversial and psychologically intense shorter works.

One of Tolstoy's most controversial works, banned in several countries on publication.
