In a near-future America, one hundred teenage boys enter an annual contest called the Long Walk: keep walking at a minimum speed indefinitely, and the last one still moving wins anything he wants. Falling below the pace three times means execution on the spot.

King, writing as Richard Bachman, wrote this before Carrie but it reads like a mature horror novel about endurance, camaraderie and the specific madness of a society that treats mass death as entertainment. The horror is entirely psychological — there are no monsters, only exhaustion, blistered feet, and the soldiers walking alongside with rifles.

One of King's earliest novels and, to many fans, one of his best. Bleak and unforgettable.
