Anne Beddingfeld witnesses a man die on a Tube platform after supposedly being electrocuted, and finds a cryptic note in his pocket that sends her onto a liner bound for South Africa, chasing a mystery involving diamonds, a secret criminal mastermind and a man in a brown suit she cannot stop thinking about.

This is Christie in adventure mode rather than village-mystery mode, narrated partly by Anne's own diary and partly by a suspicious politician's journal, and it moves at the pace of a thriller rather than a puzzle. It draws on Christie's own around-the-world trip in 1922.
