Kemal is a wealthy Istanbul businessman, engaged to a suitable woman, when he begins an affair with a distant relative named Füsun. Then she disappears, and he spends the next eight years visiting her family for dinner and stealing objects she has touched.

Salt cellars, hairpins, a ruler, and four thousand two hundred and thirteen cigarette ends. Pamuk built an actual museum in Istanbul containing these objects, and the novel functions as its catalogue. It is a portrait of obsession, of 1970s Istanbul's class anxieties, and of a man who mistakes collecting for loving.
