The Nose by Nikolai Gogol

Collegiate Assessor Kovalyov wakes up to find a flat patch where his nose used to be. Later that morning he sees the nose stepping out of a carriage in the uniform of a State Councillor, which outranks him considerably.

Kovalyov's problem is not medical but social — he cannot appear in public, cannot pursue the marriage he was planning, and cannot get the newspaper to print a lost property notice for a nose. Gogol never explains anything, and the narrator ends by admitting the whole business makes no sense.

One of the funniest short stories ever written, and the seed of a century of absurdist fiction.
